m.klemme technology, corp. introduced a line of five K-Tek microphone boom poles a couple of years ago. Each of these poles is comprised of five graphite sections. It is our opinion the five sections is the maximum number that is practical, particularly in longer poles. Five sections gives a good compromise in the extended length to collapsed length ratio. The collapsed pole is easily transportable, even the very long ones, and on the longer poles there is sufficient space in the length of the base section that the boom operator is not constantly fighting the first coupling.
If collapsed length is not an issue, such as on large sound stages or on location with major productions that use two or three man crews, a four section pole offers certain advantages. A very long four section pole can be extremely stiff as the diameter of the smallest section is still considerable. The base section can be very long providing a long unobstructed handling area. There is less chance of movement in the couplings because there are fewer of them.

Each KS series pole has a Quick Connect top section with a stainless steel thread and cable slots. Any of the K-Tek K-QS and K-QSL Quick Connect Spuds will attach directly to the pole top without the K-QC Quick Connect itself. Furthermore the smallest graphite section is large enough in inside diameter to accept an XLR connector, so wiring in the field is fast and easy. Switching from a straight cable to a coiled cord is simply a matter of interchanging the Flow Through Foot and a Coiled Cord Adapter and dropping in the cable.
We are certain that these poles will become the pole of choice for the production sound mixers and boom operators working on sound stages in the feature film industry. Our traditional five section K-Tek poles will continue to be the choice for location, documentary and video production .
